Cultural intelligence (CIQ) is the ability to understand and navigate different cultures (i.e., national origin, gender, generation, social class, political ideology, or race) effectively. It involves being aware of cultural nuances and adapting behavior accordingly in an effort to create strong interpersonal relationships that increase effectiveness whether in the classroom, athletic field, business unit, or out in the professional context. At SMU, we believe that developing cultural intelligence is the key to our university's success in today's culturally complex world. Our office helps Mustangs enhance their cultural intelligence skills, leading to improved communication, team work, leadership, and overall performance.

We work with our partners in study abroad to assist students as they get ready for their thrilling global adventures. Our study abroad and global internship CIQ training seeks to give students an in-depth look at the history, politics, and cultural norms of the countries in which they will visit or work. On campus, our team works with leaders and departments to onboard new staff and students from across the globe, ensuring a smooth transition for all.
