The Kyle D. Miller Energy Management Program

SMU has established the Kyle D. Miller Energy Management Program in the Maguire Energy Institute of the Cox School of Business to expand the school’s energy offerings in the graduate, undergraduate, and executive education programs. The program through its unique curricular and experiential initiatives is at the forefront of business education with a focus on valuation, risk management and technological innovations that are shaping the energy industry. SMU Trustee Tucker S. Bridwell ’73 and ’74 and a consortium of donors established the program to recognize Mr. Miller’s success in the energy industry. Within the program, scholarships funds are available to students (see Kyle D. Miller Energy Management Scholars).

The Kyle D. Miller Energy Management Scholars

Each semester, the Maguire Institute faculty select a small group of students as Kyle D. Miller Energy Scholars. Selection is based on academic ability, interest in the energy industry, interpersonal skills, work ethic and leadership within and outside Cox. Students are expected to play a lead role in representing the Cox School to outside constituents. In this role, they interact with industry leaders, mentor incoming students, and participate in industry events.

All Cox undergraduate and graduate students (two-year and one-year programs) are eligible to apply. For consideration, please submit:

  • Resume with relevant experience, courses, and GPA.
  • Short statement (250 words or less) describing your particular interests in the energy industry and engagements (to-date) with the Energy Club.
The benefits are:
  • Recognition as a Kyle D. Miller Energy Scholar.
  • Scholarship assistance up to but not exceeding $10,000.
  • Priority enrollment in workshops and other Maguire Institute activities.
  • Invitation to exclusive networking events with industry leaders, participate in the
  • Energy Practicum, among others.

Spindletop Student Managed Energy Investment Fund

The Institute is also the home of the SMU Cox Spindletop Student Managed Energy Investment Fund, the first of its kind. Students manage a portfolio of energy equities with exposure to all parts of the energy value chain – oilfield services, exploration and production, midstream, refining and power generation. To make an investment, or liquidate an existing investment, student teams must pitch their proposals to an advisory committee of investment bankers, securities analysts, hedge fund managers and other managers. The students must provide an overview of oil market conditions, forecasts as well as both company and relative valuation data. The “shark tank” type atmosphere provides students with real world experience in investing, pitching, and managing money.
