Ph.D. in Anthropology

While all our graduate students work toward a Ph.D. in Anthropology, they concentrate in either Cultural Anthropology or Archaeology. In the Cultural Anthropology program, students are trained broadly in contemporary anthropological theory and methodology. They have the option to complete their coursework on a general track or further specialize in Medical Anthropology.

The archaeology program at SMU focuses largely on the New World, with faculty research interests ranging from the earliest hunter-gatherers to complex societies across North, Central, and South America. The program offers broad training in contemporary archaeological theory, method, and scientific application, and is strongly field-oriented with current projects in various localities in the Americas.
