The Tsai Center celebrated the law school’s 20th intellectual property symposium by bringing back familiar faces. The event, chaired by Tsai Center Co-Director and SMU Dedman School of Law Professor David Taylor, highlighted how Texas and SMU established themselves at the forefront of IP law.

The inaugural Tsai Center Summit:  Food & Drug Law Scholars retreat held May 31 - June 2, 2023 included ten FDA scholars from universities across the country who not only were able to workshop their research,  but also got to know each other beyond their work.

Medical, technical, and legal experts came together at the SMU Science and Technology Law Review’s annual symposium to address how their respective professions can stay ahead of the burgeoning, brave new world of medical artificial intelligence.

Ten years ago President Obama signed into law the America Invents Act, a sweeping patent reform bill. The Tsai Center marked the occasion this spring by holding a symposium—the law school’s 17th Annual Symposium on Emerging Intellectual Property Issues—reflecting on the impact of the AIA on patent law and practice. The event featured federal appellate and district judges, a Regional Director of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and leading law professors and practitioners.

SMU Dedman School of Law students got a firsthand look at federal appellate arguments—and invaluable advice on what to do (and not do) during those arguments—when the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit brought its docket to the Hilltop.

The head of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has advice for law students hoping to land their dream jobs after graduation. "First and foremost, study and get good grades. And love what you do. Always stay curious," Andre Iancu said in a 2018 Leadership Lecture sponsored by the Tsai Center for Law, Science and Innovation.

John Carmack has been called "the greatest programmer alive," "the Mozart of computer coding," and a brain on legs." As a co-founder of id Software in the early 1990s, Carmack helped revolutionize the video-gaming industry.

In October 2016, the Tsai Center held the first lecture of its new Leadership Lecture Series. The event featured The Honorable Sharon Prost, Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.

SMU Dedman School of Law launched the Tsai Center for Law, Science and Innovation with a highly successful symposium focused on the future of innovation and intellectual property. More than 250 people attended the event.
