Panopto is a powerful way to create, edit, store, and share videos that integrate seamlessly into your Canvas LMS courses. Videos can include interactive content and quizzes and be shared within playlists and folders.

Getting Started

Accessing Panopto Directly

Panopto also provides a stand-alone video sharing portal. This portal allows you to upload, caption, and share your videos without having to navigate through Canvas. You can log into the portal using your usual SMU credentials.

  1. Click the Sign In button above.
  2. If not already logged in, at the Panopto site:
    1. Click the Sign In button.
    2. At the SSO window, enter your SMU email address and your password.
    3. Authorize with Duo, if needed.
  3. From the dropdown menu, choose the option that meets your needs.

Accessing Panopto via the Canvas LMS

This is the most common way users access Panopto. You will connect to the Panopto Video Platform within the Canvas LMS instead of Panopto's site.

  1. Click the Sign In via the Canvas LMS button above.
  2. After signing in to Canvas, if needed, click on the course to add the Panopto video.
  3. From the side navigation, click Panopto.
  4. From the dropdown menu, choose the option that meets your needs.

Retention of Panopto Files

icon of a video file with a clock overlayedPanopto is for hosting regularly used, active course-related video materials and is not intended as an unlimited video storage system. Videos not routinely used or need to be archived indefinitely should be moved to SMU's enterprise cloud storage system or other storage solution and then deleted from Panopto.
