Beyond the Third Rail: An Interactive and Supported Student Dialogue on Issues that Matter


Have you ever avoided a political discussion, fearing it will devolve into a debate? Are you dreading the next family dinner, worrying about a one-sided conversation? SMU’s Cary M. Maguire Center for Ethics and Public Responsibility invites you to attend a professional conversation experience, “Beyond the Third Rail: An Interactive and Supported Student Dialogue on Issues that Matter.” Through your attendance, you will be provided with the tools and skills needed to feel empowered to discuss topics that may drive others apart. This conversation will be facilitated by SMU’s Dr. Jill DeTemple, Associate with . Dr. DeTemple has facilitated across the United States with organizations, including the Jewish Federation, Texas A&M Law School, and more than a dozen secondary and collegiate institutions.

About the Dialogue Structure

“Beyond the Third Rail” will immediately follow the Center for Presidential History’s Third Rail series lecture “Who Gets Your Vote? U.S. Domestic Policy Under the Next Democratic or Republican Administration.” The lecture will focus on each candidate’s domestic agenda, featuring  of the University of Texas-Austin making the case for an incoming Democratic administration and  of the Heritage Foundation outlining Republican programs and policies. This discussion will serve as the content for the Beyond the Third Rail experience.

 

Rather than rehashing worn-out, divisive, and polarizing talking points, come learn about the tools necessary to engage in a meaningful and productive conversation. to experience a new way of engaging in conversation, being heard about what matters to you, and listening to what matters to others with courage, confidence, and compassion.

The Maguire Ethics Center is excited to partner with the Dallas County Elections department to host a voter registration drive on Tuesday, September 17th, in the Hughes Trigg Student Center. Join us to register to vote, learn about absentee ballots, and learn how to use voting machines ahead of the November Election.
