Bio

MD Shakhawat Hossain is a second-year graduate student in the Cultural Anthropology (Medical Anthropology track) PhD program, with research interests in medical anthropology, gender, the politics of death, and visual anthropology. His dissertation research focuses on how individuals injured in Bangladesh's 2024 July Movement navigate the complex processes of rehabilitation and reintegration. Through an examination of disability, state violence, and bioethical dilemmas, his work explores the experiences of wounded protesters, addressing broader questions about identity, belonging, and care in process of reintegration and rehabilitation.

In 2023, Shakhawat was awarded a research fellowship from the Inclusive Resilience to Climate Change (IRCC) program, supported by the Government of Bangladesh, to conduct their master's thesis research. In 2024, he received Provost Summer Funding to conduct predissertation fieldwork in Bangladesh during the summer.
