The SMU Guildhall Curriculum

Teamwork and specialized learning are at the heart of our curriculum

smu guildhall academics team huddle

Our combined lectures, labs, and studios prepare students for the video game industry with studies in game development, industry trends, leadership, teamwork, professional development, and ethics.

The  we offer combine both independent, specialized student work and team-centric, multidisciplinary work. This allows our students to have both a narrow track of concentrated study in the cornerstone of game development they wish to pursue, as well as a studio-modeled collaborative Team Game Production atmosphere in which they learn to work in the style and pace of the industry while forming teams of both large and small sizes with varied leadership roles along the way.

Our Cohort Model

You'll enter our program with a "cohort" that includes all those admitted to our program at the same time as you. Together, your cohort will move through the program in lockstep, with each course being a pre-requisite for the next in the sequence to first elevate your individual skills via independent work and research (which informs Master’s theses and Directed Focus Studies), and then combine them to develop collaborative team-based skills while making games together.

Primary course types include:

  • Specialization-Specific Courses: Primarily involving independent study, these classes develop your knowledge and skills in the particular area of game development you aspire to pursue (art, design, production, or programming). Your classmates will be in your same track, and your faculty will each have years of experience in your discipline.
  • Interdisciplinary Courses: Bringing you together with students from other specializations, these courses enable you to make games as a "studio," collaborate on intriguing research under the leadership of esteemed research faculty, polish your professional assets and leverage Career Services strategies for job market readiness, and study critical industry-wide topics.

Each student takes the following courses:

  • 4 cross-disciplinary Team Game Production courses
  • 1 professional development course to polish your resume and portfolio, practice interviewing and networking, and more
  • Specialization-specific course sequence (9 courses for Production, and 11 courses for Art, Level Design, and Software Development)
  • 1 ethics course
  • 4 courses that focus on research to advance each of the specialization specific fields in game development (Master's students only)

Gain Real-World Experience Before You Graduate

SMU Guildhall offers many opportunities for experiential learning

Our curriculum is interdisciplinary in thought and action, designed to allow students to “learn it, live it, then lead it” in real-world style, pace, and environment.

In Team Game Production courses, students work in cross-disciplinary teams to develop three or more professional-grade 2D and 3D games in the style and pace of the industry. These games have won many awards, and several have gone on to be further developed and published post-graduation.

In addition, many important research initiatives take place annually between SMU Guildhall faculty, students, and collaborative teams. These opportunities for research in game design have been facilitated with faculty via various grants, licenses and technologies over the years from national institutes and commissions, independent companies, educational institutions, game studios, and more.
