Jennifer Burr AltabefSMU Trustee and Dedman School of Law Centennial Chair Jennifer Burr Altabef ’78, ’81 is a renowned civic and philanthropic figure who gives generously of her time, talent and means to a wide array of programs and initiatives at SMU and throughout Dallas. Following a notable career practicing law in the public and private sectors, she continues to find new ways to support the growth and success of the city and University she credits for her success.

This year marks the 100-year anniversary of the Dedman School of Law. What do you think are some of the strengths of the school?

Dedman Law offers outstanding experiential learning opportunities, including legal clinics and externships. These are so important as students connect rigorous, traditional classroom learning to serving clients after law school. Dedman Law also has a robust entrepreneurial spirit, showcased by its business and international law programs.

Why do you think the relationship between Dedman Law and the city of Dallas has been so important for both?

Great cities need great law schools. Dallas and the Dedman School of Law have grown together in sophistication and purpose over the last 100 years, both developing expertise in business, oil and gas, aviation, real estate, and international affairs. The law school has trained some of our city’s greatest leaders in law, business and public service.

You’ve given over the years to a variety of SMU causes, including the Dedman Law Centennial Scholarship Challenge. What inspires you to give back, and what impact do you hope your generosity will have?

I received scholarships at SMU, and it is an absolute joy to provide the same opportunity to others. The students at SMU and Dedman Law continue to inspire me. As I watch them grow and move from school to practice, I see an amazing return on investment. I also believe they see the value in helping those who come after them.

As an alumna, you have actively volunteered on a variety of SMU boards and committees, including the Dedman School of Law Executive Board and the Meadows School of the Arts Executive Board. Why has it been so important to you to keep and expand your relationship with the University?

As I got more involved, I realized how many generations of dedicated people nurture, build and support all aspects of the University. Our current success is only possible because of the careful work done by those who came before us. The future of SMU depends on continuing to put strong links on that chain today.

As the Dedman School of Law continues to evolve and grow, what most excites you about its future?

Dedman Law is experiencing unprecedented growth and acceleration right now. Dean Jason Nance has constructed a strategic plan to advance the school academically and grow corporate and judicial opportunities for graduates. By investing in scholarships and facilities, we can ensure Dedman Law students will make the most of the opportunities provided by the school and the dynamic environment of a growing Dallas.
