Securing the future for generations of Mustangs

In 2024–2025, donors committed a record $28 million in a single year to SMU through planned gifts – a 46% increase over the previous year for the University. Establishing a planned gift allows donors to support areas of the University that are most meaningful to them and deepen their involvement in those areas during their lifetime.

For example, longtime supporters of SMU Anne and Alan Bromberg named SMU in their wills with gifts of support for Dedman School of Law and Meadows School of the Arts. Their planned gifts to the schools add to existing endowments and create new endowments that support scholarships, programs and faculty.

“The Brombergs’ passion for art and the law will live on in future generations a result of their planned gift,” said R. Gerald Turner, SMU president, at the time of the gift.

  • Legacy gifts name SMU as a beneficiary in a will or a partial beneficiary of an IRA or retirement account. This can be helpful for younger alumni establishing their careers and building wealth who can change the gift over time or as circumstances and priorities shift.
  • Endowed scholarships are established in the name of the donor or a loved one with a current gift of $100,000 or more. This enables donors to see their impact on scholarship recipients during the donor’s life – and allows the donor to augment their legacy through a planned estate gift to the named endowment fund.

Donors can also designate gifts of any amount to established funds for scholarships, certain schools or programs, Athletics, student groups or greatest needs – all of which greatly impact the University.
