Purpose and Process of the Lyle Curriculum Committee (LCC)

The LCC addresses the creation, modification, or termination of programs, courses, and procedures at both departmental and School levels.

Proposed academic changes must first be approved at the departmental level or by the relevant interdisciplinary committee before being submitted to the LCC via their representative. The LCC evaluates the proposals, considering their impact on other departments and resolving any questions with the submitting department. Following this, the LCC votes on the items, with decisions made by majority vote.

Approved items, along with supporting documentation, are then sent to the School faculty for discussion, culminating in a vote via regular faculty meeting or electronic voting, coordinated by the LCC. Voting results are based on majority approval, excluding abstentions.

Approvals

Items affecting only the submitting department (e.g., course numbering changes) are considered Information Items and submitted to the School Faculty without requiring a vote. The LCC, in consultation with the Dean’s representative, decides which items qualify as Information Items. Other items require a vote from the Lyle Faculty for approval. Depending on the nature of the item, further approval may be needed from the University’s Educational Program Committee (EPC) and the University’s Board of Trustees. Committee Members

The Lyle Curriculum Committee (LCC) serves as the central hub for academic affairs within the School. It typically includes one representative from each department and, as a non-voting member, the Dean’s representative (typically the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs). Each department may choose to nominate multiple faculty that focus on specific aspects of their curriculum (such as undergraduate and graduate). However, the department will have only one vote on each item within the LCC. A chair is elected from the departmental representatives. Members serve one-year terms and may be reappointed at their department's discretion.
