SMU Lyle School of Engineering undergraduate programs in civil engineering, electrical and computer engineering, environmental engineering, and mechanical engineering are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, . The undergraduate computer science program that awards the degree Bachelor of Science (B.S.) is accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET, . The undergraduate computer science program that awards the degree Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) is not accredited by a Commission of ABET. ABET does not provide accreditation for the disciplines of management science. ABET is the recognized accreditor for college and university programs in applied science, computing, engineering, and technology. ABET is a federation of more than 25 professional and technical societies representing these fields. Among the most respected accreditation organizations in the U.S., ABET has provided leadership and quality assurance in higher education for over 70 years. ABET accreditation is a significant achievement. It means that:

  • Our students are ready to practice as soon as they graduate.
  • Our local employers can count on our program graduates to meet their needs.
  • The parents of our students can be proud of the education their children receive and confident that their time and money were well spent.
  • Our state licensure, certification, and registration boards know our graduates are prepared to enter the profession.

Civil Engineering

Undergraduate Program Educational Objectives

The undergraduate Civil Engineering Program prepares graduates to achieve the following educational objectives during the first 5 to 15 years of their professional careers:

  • Be entrusted by society to create a sustainable and resilient world and enhance the global quality of life through the practice of civil engineering.
  • Serve others competently, collaboratively, and ethically as either engineering designers, managers, or leaders in the public or private sectors.
  • Demonstrate mastery and leadership as builders, planners, environmental stewards, innovators, and advocates for public health, safety, and welfare.
  • Obtain licensing as professional engineers.

The Civil Engineering program will equip students to demonstrate:

  1. an ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics 
  2. an ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors 
  3. an ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences 
  4. an ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts 
  5. an ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives
  6. an ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions
  7. an ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.
  8. an understanding of professional practice issues and an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of public institutions and private organizations pertaining to public policy and regulations
  9. an understanding of basic concepts in project management, business, and leadership.

 

Computer Science

From the department mission statement we have derived the following specific objectives for the B.S. Computer Science program. These are to be met by graduates within a few years after graduation. The objectives are to produce graduates who:

  • Are productive professionals in some information technology discipline.
  • Are pursuing (have pursued) graduate or professional degrees.
  • Become successful entrepreneurs and managers.
  • Have a broad knowledge and wide range of interests.
  • Are valuable members of their general community.
  • Take a leadership role in their chosen field.

The B.S. Computer Science degree program has been structured to ensure that the outcomes which follow are met by all graduates at the time of their graduation. All graduates will possess an ability to:

  1. Analyze a complex computing problem and apply principles of computing and other relevant disciplines to identify solutions.
  2. Design, implement, and evaluate a computing-based solution to meet a given set of computing requirements in the context of the program’s discipline.
  3. Communicate effectively in a variety of professional contexts.
  4. Recognize professional responsibilities and make informed judgments in computing practice based on legal and ethical principles.
  5. Function effectively as a member or leader of a team engaged in activities appropriate to the program’s discipline.
  6. Apply computer science theory and software development fundamentals to produce computing-based solutions.


 

Electrical and Computer Engineering

Undergraduate Program Educational Objectives

From the department mission statement we have derived the following specific objectives for the B.S. Electrical and Computer Engineering program. These are to be met by graduates within a few years after graduation. The objectives are to produce graduates who will:

  • Successfully understand, formulate, analyze and solve a variety of electrical and computer engineering problems
  • Effectively design a variety of engineering systems, products or experiments
  • Lead careers with social impact and/or pursue graduate study in any discipline
  • Have the ability to assume leadership and entrepreneurial positions
  • Function and communicate effectively, both individually and in multi-disciplinary teams
  • Understand the importance of lifelong learning, ethics and professional accountability

All graduates of the electrical and computer engineering program are expected to have:
