Carter Alexander
Carter Alexander began his dance training with his mother, Amanda Stone, in Cheyenne, WY, and continued at Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Dallas, as well as the Dallas Ballet Academy. After graduating, he danced with the Hartford Ballet, studying under renowned teacher Truman Finney, where he also met his wife, Jeanne Elser. He later performed with the Kansas City Ballet and Pennsylvania Ballet, teaching on the school faculties of both companies.
After retiring from performing, Alexander became the principal teacher at Ballet Workshop New England and artistic associate for the Massachusetts Youth Ballet. He reunited with Finney at the School of Ballet Arizona, serving as assistant school director. He also spent seven years as a senior faculty member and school principal at Miami City Ballet School (MCBS), where he helped over 70 students achieve professional dance careers.
Since returning to Dallas, Alexander has served as associate artistic director of Chamberlain Performing Arts, artistic director of Dallas DanceFest/Dallas Dances (2016–2018), and Ballet Dallas (2018–2020), where he choreographed four premieres. He has been a guest teacher at Ballet Austin, Indiana University, CPYB, and The Portland Ballet, and a ballet consultant for Booker T. Washington HSPVA.
In 2018, Alexander co-organized the aka:ballet choreography project with Hailey von Schlehenried and Albert Drake, which created five world premieres in three weeks, culminating in a performance at the Latino Cultural Center. Currently an Artist-in-Residence at SMU Meadows School of the Arts, he also served as interim Chair of the Division of Dance in fall 2022. Carter has choreographed four works for the Meadows Dance Ensemble: Luisant (2019), Syvällinen (2020), Repetition Repeating Difference (2023) and The Noise of Time (2024).
Alexander holds a B.F.A. in Dance Performance from SMU and an M.F.A. in Choreography from Jacksonville University.
