The Division of Journalism offers concentrations in broadcast, digital and print. The division prepares students to enter medium- to large-size media markets through classroom and hands-on learning in the newsroom, broadcast studio and control room, podcast recording booth and more. Strong internships are available in Dallas, a top-five media market, and in multiple cities across the U.S.

Pederson Broadcast Studio

The professional control room and studio are supplied with all the equipment students need to produce TV news. Students learn to operate professional cameras, a Grass Valley video switcher, teleprompter, CG, Still Store and an on-air server. Every weekday, students produce, write and crew a news show covering SMU news, as well as local and national news.

FM 4350, Styling and Visual Culture

From Afrofuturism to Zendaya, this course examines the history, subcultures and trends shaping visual culture today as applies it to the dynamic field of fashion styling, including shoot production and hands-on training in editorial, commercial runway and celebrity styling.
JOUR 4306, Business and Journalism

An intensive introduction to business, financial markets, and economics, combined with practice in reporting and writing about these complex topics. Gives aspiring business journalists the tools to make business information understandable and accessible to news audiences.

Students learn the evolving study of applied statistics in sports to better explain critical trends within major sports. Students learn data visualization as an aid to storytelling and understand social media metrics to maximize engagement with audiences.
