Within the Division, Graduate Assistants (GAs) gain work experience in the dynamic field of higher education while developing transferrable skills that can serve many future career goals. As part-time, bi-weekly paid paraprofessionals whose work expectations match that of full-time staff, GAs serve a critical role in supporting the multifaceted work of the Division.

Position Description

The Data Analytics Graduate Assistant for Career Development will play a vital role in supporting the Hegi Family Career Development Center's mission through data analysis, goal setting, and the implementation of strategic initiatives. Collaborating closely with the Career Development Team, employer representatives, students, and alumni, the assistant will contribute to the assessment and reporting of office initiatives. By evaluating the impact of these efforts, the assistant will help cultivate new opportunities and experiences for students. Reporting directly to the Associate Director for Career Development, the assistant will be instrumental in driving the center's objectives forward.

Position Description

The Graduate Assistant for Employer Relations will assist the Hegi Family Career Development Center with employer relations activities, research, outreach, data analysis, and support. This will entail working closely with the Employer Relations Team as well as employer representatives, students, and alumni. The primary objective is to help cultivate opportunities, networks, and experiences for pre-majors, students in the Dedman School of Humanities and Sciences, Meadows School of the Arts and Annette Caldwell Simmons School of Education to aid their career development and build towards successful career outcomes through their interviews, offers and placements. The ERT GA will report directly to the Associate Director for Employer Relations.

Position Description

The Internship Programs Graduate Assistant plays a critical role in supporting the coordination and execution of Hegi Summer Internship Programs. This position is responsible for managing key aspects of the internship process, including developing comprehensive program timelines, overseeing employer and student applications in Qualtrics and 12twenty, and coordinating marketing and outreach efforts. The Graduate Assistant will also facilitate qualitative feedback collection, schedule internship host site visits, and assist with intern cohort communications.

Additional responsibilities include managing student and employer assessments, organizing application submissions, and supporting the review and placement process in collaboration with the Assistant and Associate Director for Employer Relations. The GA will also assist with intern cohort onboarding, debrief sessions, and celebrations. Participation in weekly meetings and providing administrative support as needed are essential components of this role. This position offers an opportunity to develop program management, recruitment, and employer relations skills in a dynamic career services environment.

Position Description

The Leadership Programs Graduate Assistant (GA) works with the Coordinator for Leadership Programs to support multiple events and cohort-based programs. The GA plans and executes monthly pop-up events highlighting the SMU Leadership Framework and assists in the preparation of semesterly Caswell Leadership Endowment Fund Joint Committee Meetings. During the spring semester the Coordinator for Leadership Programs and GA co-facilitate the Cultivate “A Leadership Think Tank” Program. Beyond programming, the GA helps with recruiting programs listed below, managing the operating budgets that fund them, and contributes to the success of the Student Center and Activities office.

Opportunities as Graduate Assistants

Developmental and social opportunities for Graduate Assistants include professional development trainings, invitations to departmental and Division meetings, and in many cases opportunities to sit on departmental, Division or even University committees. GAs are encouraged to connect their academic coursework to their work experience in our Division.
